BRIEF PROFILE:

Professor Benedict Chima Onuoha, a Nigerian, is a management teacher, author, consultant, administrator and trade unionist. He is a Professor of Management, Faculty of Management Sciences of the University of Port Harcourt. And a visiting Professor at the University of Port Harcourt Business School. He had previously held tenured, visiting and adjunctship appointments and Professorships in many institutions. They included: Abia State University, Uturu; Kogi State University, Anyigba; Delta State University, Asaba Campus; University of Uyo and Abuja Business School, etc.

 

Prof. Onuoha holds six degrees including five higher degrees. He is a trained and registered management consultant (a member of IMCON); a federal government accredited management trainer; a chartered manager; and member, The Academy of Management, Nigeria (TAMN). He is the founder/president of Benedict’s Strategies and Consulting; and B-SCAF Consulting Limited.

 

He has been actively involved in teaching and research activities for over thirty years, in the university system, held many administrative positions and produced hundreds and thousands of graduates. He had authored and co-authored over 160 scholarly publications including 20 books. Currently, Prof. Onuoha is an external assessor for seven universities, for lecturers seeking promotions to Professorial cadre. He is also an external examiner (mostly for post graduate programmes) in some other universities.

 

He was Vice Chairman for many years and Acting Chairman of ASUU, Abia State university chapter, and a member of its Governing Council for four years. Prof. Onuoha is also a community leader and high chief. He is married and blessed with four children.

Governments all over the world strive to encourage the growth and development of entrepreneurs and SMEs in their economies. The major rationale for this practice is the realization that SMEs and entrepreneurship are agents of economic transformation. However, in most third world nations, including Nigeria, a myriad of impediments militates against effective entrepreneurship development. This article did a critical analysis of these impediments, also highlighting their implications to the nation’s economy. The article made far-reaching recommendations, which if implemented religiously will greatly assist the Federal Government in its quest to making the Nigerian economy one of the twenty biggest economies in the year 2020.
2 Prof. B Chima Onuoha (2008), Developing the Hospitality Industry in Nigeria: An Imperative for the Adoption of the Marketing Philosophy. African Journal of Entrepreneurship, 1(2): 48-59 This paper, by means of both primary and secondary data sources, explored the level of appreciation of the marketing philosophy by operators in the Hospitality industry in Nigeria and came in the marketing philosophy as being responsible for the under developed nature of this industry. It further proposed an ideal model of Hospitality Marketing Relationship which it suggests should replace the existing one as identified by the researchers.
3 Prof. B. Chima Onuoha (2008), Analysis of Factors Responsible for SMES and Entrepreneurship Failure in Nigeria. African Journal of Entrepreneurship, 1(3): 37-44 Small to medium scale enterprises (SMES) are known all over the world for contributing to the economic advancement of nations. While in the developed and emerging (newly industrializing economies (NIES) as a result of solid institution al framework, their failure rate is very low, on the other hand, in the developing nations, including Nigeria, their mortality rate is very high. This article started by highlighting the operational definitions of SMES; their role in economic development which if consistently implemented can assist greatly in reducing the failure rate of our SMES, hence allowing them to play the needed role in the nations quest for economic emancipation.

Journal of Finance and Economic Research, 2(1): 49-63 Entrepreneurship and entrepreneurs hold the key to economic and technological development of any nation – developed, developing or under developed. As such governments in these countries have in place policies in aid of entrepreneurship development. And by tension, their economic emancipation. This article x –rays’ government policies on entrepreneurship development in Nigeria. The article went ahead to highlight and discuss the development imperatives of those policies. To further the economic development of this great nation, the government has to enlarge the scope of these policies.
5 Prof. B. Chima Onuoha (2010), Government Policies on Entrepreneurship Development: A Study of Selected Countries. African Journal of Entrepreneurship, 2 (1): 104 – 119. Governments and nations across the globe have shown enormous interests in the development of entrepreneurship. This, they do by putting in place relevant public policies. This article is on government policies on entrepreneurship in selected countries, namely, Malaysia, Singapore and Nigeria. Economic indicators from the research efforts showed that while these policies have been effective and efficient in Malaysia and Singapore, hence their present enviable global economic status, Nigeria had not fared well. We identified the factors responsible for this failing. Finally, the article called for appropriate mechanisms to check this drift.
6 Prof. B. Chima Onuoha and C. N. Ogbuji (2010), Venture Capital and the Development of Industrial Districts: Implications for Marketing Management. African Journal of Entrepreneurship, 2(2): 17-28. In the article, we discussed the role venture capital has played in the economic emancipation of most nations including USA where it was originated and popularized in the first place, to other advanced nations and the newly industrializing (emerging) economies. We postulated that venture capital, where effectively applied can play a great role in helping the Nigeria economy to develop; assist her to participate activity in international trade/business and raise the standard of living of her citizenry.
7 Prof. B. Chima Onuoha (2010), Government Policies on Entrepreneurship Development: A Study of South Africa, UAE and Nigeria. African Journal of Entrepreneurship, 2(2): 64 – 83. Entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship are agents of economic development. That explains why governments all over the globe show continuous interests in them through deliberate policies. This article on government policies on entrepreneurship in selected countries – South Africa, United Arab Emirates and Nigeria.  Economic indicators from the comparative research efforts showed that while these policies have been effective in South Africa, United Arab Emirates, which account for their present enviable economic status, Nigeria is still lagging behind. The factors responsible for this failing were comprehensively identified and highlighted. Finally, it is assumed that having identified these challenges, policy makers and the concerned government agencies can now put the expropriate mechanisms to check the inhibitors of development.

Kogi State University, Journal of Public Administration, 1 (1): 1-11 Entrepreneurship in the Third World nations is under distress. This is because their SMEs have high mortality rate. As a result, SMEs and Entrepreneurs have not contributed to these nations’ economic advancement the way they ought to. This is because they are plagued with numerous problems and challenges, among which are: high production costs; limited scope of operation; poor infrastructures; inconsistent government policies; competition from imported goods; poor management; etc. It is against this backdrop that this advocacy paper has developed strategies to enable most Third World nations to attain successful entrepreneurship consequently economic and technological development. Some of them include: continuous training and development; role of trade and professional associations; environmental scanning; role of universities and research institutes; role of government and SMEs themselves; etc
9 B. Chima Onuoha (2012), Professionalizing Family Businesses in the South-East Region of Nigeria. International Business and Management, 5(1): 153-168 This article is on Professionalizing Family Business in The South-East Region of Nigeria. The survey research covered the eight commercial cities of the region. The study revealed that virtually all the family businesses surveyed are not professionalized. Majority of family enterprises have no clearly stated vision and mission statements, they rarely attended seminars and training programs; have few graduates and professionals in their employment, have poor wages and salaries structure; not incorporated; few are members of professional and trade associations; and largely not aware of government incentives policies on entrepreneurship development. It is against this backdrop that the paper made far reaching recommendations: such as incorporating family business, employing graduates and professionals, having functional boards of directors, employing the services of consultants, striving to be the best at something, etc, and highlighted the advantages of professionalizing family businesses to the benefit of the enterprises themselves and the Nigerian economy.
10 Prof. B. Chima Onuoha (2013), Poor Succession Planning by Entrepreneurs: The Bane of Generational Enterprises in South-East, Nigeria. An International Journal of Arts and Humanities, 2(2), 270-281 The Ibos of South- East Nigeria are renowned for their zeal and tenacity in business: spanning decades, yet there are no corporations that are in their third and fourth generation. This is as a result of poor attitude to succession planning. This article- a survey research, covered the commercial cities of south east region of Nigeria. The findings include: majority of enterprises are not incorporated and over 94% of entrepreneurs have no succession plans. The factors responsible for theses are: the feelings that the entrepreneurs are still strong and healthy (b) uninterested children and relations: (c) entrepreneurs not knowing what succession planning is all about; and (d) no capable have yet/ fear of mismanagement. Based on these findings, the article made recommendations which will greatly assist the South- East region of Nigeria to have hundreds and thousands of generational enterprises, which in turn will aid the country’s quest to be a major global economic player in the year 2020.
11 B. Chima Onuoha (2013), Wealth Creation, Retirement and Succession Planning of Entrepreneurs in South-East, Nigeria. International Business and Management, 7(1): 99-105 The South-East, Nigeria has a long history of entrepreneurship in West Africa, yet there are no records of business enterprises inherited from the last three or four generations of their founders. This is a survey research and it covered five commercial cities of the region. The study revealed among others: close to 26% of entrepreneurs are above 60 years; majority don’t know when they would retire, or not even thinking of retiring and 94.2% have no succession plans. It is against this backdrop that the paper made far reaching recommendations such as: the need for entrepreneurs to incorporate and professionalize their enterprises, employ graduates and professionals, have well defined retirement program and good succession plans. All these will enhance the chances of these entrepreneurs to develop big and well managed corporations, hence making generational transitions of businesses possible.
12 B. Chima Onuoha, Ph.D (2013), Factors Militating Against the Global Competitiveness of Manufacturing firms in Nigeria. American International Journal of Contemporary Research, 3(4): 54-63 The research efforts in this article have been geared towards identifying the factors militating against the global competitiveness of manufacturing firms in Nigeria. The major challenges and problems of the sector include: deteriorating and poor infrastructures; high production costs; inconsistent government policies on the sector; severe competition from imported goods; limited scope of operation; financial constraints; among a myriad of other impediments. To be a developed economy, Nigeria should have a strong and dynamic manufacturing sector. To enable Nigeria to be one of the twenty biggest economics in 2020, in line with the government Vision 20:2020, this article made far reaching recommendations which should be implemented religiously.
13 Prof. B. Chima Onuoha (2016), Achieving Sustainable Development via creating an Entrepreneurial Country. Lessons from USA and Israel. University of Port Harcourt Journal of Management, 1 (1): 17-32 This advocacy paper examines how being an entrepreneurial country leads to economic development. It highlighted the features of advanced and developing countries. With clear data, it showed that Nigeria is a developing nation. Moreover, with enormous natural resources and resilient and resourceful citizens, there is no reason on earth why this ‘giant’ of Africa should not be an advanced country, using the lessons from USA and Israel. It is against this backdrop that the paper made far-reaching recommendations on how Nigeria can be entrepreneurial cum advanced nation.
14 Sylva Waribugo & B. C. Onuoha (2016), Organizational Learning Capability, Perceived Organizational Support and Growth of Auto Parts Manufacturing Firms in Nigeria. European Journal of Business and Management, 8(17): 104-117 This Study investigated the relationship between Organizational Learning Capability and Growth of Auto Parts manufacturing firms in Nnewi business cluster, Nigeria; and to ascertain whether Perceived Organizational Support would play a moderating role. A sample size of 75 was selected from a population of 103 employees of seven auto parts manufacturing firms. 72 copies of the questionnaire were eligibly filled and data was analyzed using Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient with the aid of SPSS version 21. The findings showed that whereas risk taking does not substantially enhance growth, interaction with the external environment serves as a catalyst for growth. Findings also revealed that perceived organizational support moderates the relationship between organizational learning capability and growth. It was therefore recommended that managers of autoparts manufacturing firms should cautiously take risk and interact with the external environment in multiple ways, while making sure that employees are properly taken care of, and their contributions appreciated. The role of government to providing enabling environment for SMEs to strive was emphasized.
15 Azogor, Nchedo Somgolie; B. Chima Onuoha, Ph.D & I. G. Nwede Ph.D (2017), Leadership Styles and Organizational Performance in Deposit Money Banks (Evidence from Rivers State). International Journal of Advanced Academic Research, 3(5): 78-89 This study examines the significant relationship between Leadership Styles and Organizational Performance in deposit money banks operating in Rivers State. Five banks were investigated in this study. The study is quasi-experimental and adopted the structured questionnaire in data generation with analysis carried out on the study variables using the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient which was used to test a total of 7 hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The study reveals that a significant relationship exists between leadership styles and the dimensions of organizational performance. Based on these findings, all 7 null hypotheses were rejected and their alternatives accepted. This study recommends that management in commercial banks should employ a flexible approach towards leadership by taking into consideration individual and contextual variables in order to optimally achieve the organizational performance goals of profitability, customer satisfaction and employee satisfaction.
